Thomas Kinkade, Painter of Light

Thomas Kinkade Biography

Thomas Kinkade was a very commercially successful American artist who is also known as the "Painter of Light".  His use of color and illumination were standard trademarks of his pastoral portraits that evoked a longing for a simpler time.   Often compared to Norman Rockwell in some regards, paintings of Thomas Kinkade depicted a more innocent quality that appealed to millions.

Who is Thomas Kinkade?

Kinkade may have been an extremely admired artist, but he was also a larger than life public figure.  He was considered outgoing and gregarious which seems to contradict our preconceived notion of the "starving artist" relegated to a life of solitude and struggle.   Most of his professional colleagues will attest to the fact that although paintings of Thomas Kinkade were enormously popular during his lifetime, his business expertise was not.

He was considered a ruthless businessman with a healthy ego, although perhaps no one has sold more paintings while still alive than the great American artist who is Tomas Kinkade.

Thomas Kinkade, the Family Man

Interestingly enough, his public image was completely contrary to his wonderful artist vision and family life.  His series of cottage paints are still to this day considered inspirational, emphasizing simple pleasures in life.   He was not averse to hiding little bits of symbology in his work either.  He liked to include carefully veiled "N's" within these cottage depictions, an homage to his loving wife, Nannette.

He commemorated each of his four daughters as well by including their names into the titles of some of the more popular cottage paintings of Thomas Kinkade:   Everett's Cottage, Windsor Manor, Evening at Merritt's Cottage and Chandler's Cottage.

Charitable Works of Thomas Kinkade

Kinkade was said to have viewed his work as a form of ministry, calling to his Christian beliefs.  Although his artwork has always been enormously popular since the mid 1980's, he still made time to use his fame and talents to benefit many hospitals, schools and charitable endeavors.

Because of his wild life that was depicted in the press in his later years, many are still wondering who is Thomas Kinkade?  A man who had created such marvelous images for the likes of St. Jude's Children's Hospital, The Salvation Army, Hurricane Katrina Relief and even for the Vatican Council in Rome can't possibly have such a devilish streak.   The final Thomas Kinkade Biography will most likely show that he was just as complex as the rest of us, though perhaps infinitely more talented.
